A complete set comprises of a flat side flange and an o-ring side flange. The o-ring side flange contains a groove seat to place a rubber o-ring (normally made of NBR material). The complete set forms a seal between a flat surface and o-ring held in a recessed circular groove in the other half. Tightening the bolts draws the two halves together and compresses the O-ring.
Due to this usage of the o-ring, flanges with o-rings has an advantage over metal to metal flanges as all-metal flanges are more prone to leakage because they must be tightened to a higher, yet narrower torque range. This makes metal to metal flanges more prone to strip threads or crack.
A complete set of flange is tightened using socket head cap screws & spring washers according to recommended torque. The screw lengths are usually shorter than the overall SAE flanges length but this is normal in accordance to SAE J518 standard. Also, as per SAE J518, there are no requirements for hex nuts for securing the flanges.

They are designed to provide leak-free connections for high-pressure and large-size hydraulic systems. Available in sizes from 3/8″ to 5″, stainless steel SAE hydraulic flanges can be connected using butt weld, socket weld, or threaded connections (BSPP, NPT, metric, or JIC). Code 61 flanges have a working pressure of up to 210 Bar (3000 PSI), while Code 62 flanges can withstand up to 420 Bar (6000 PSI). Stainless steel SAE hydraulic flanges are widely used in industrial hydraulics, mobile hydraulics, and shipbuilding. They offer several advantages over other types of connectors, including higher pressure resistance, better shock and vibration resistance, and easier installation in confined spaces.
How Do You Properly Install a SAE High Pressure Flange
Begin by choosing the correct flange size and material. SAE flanges come in various sizes and materials to suit different pressure and temperature demands.
Clean the flange surfaces to remove dirt, rust, or any other contaminants that may interfere with a good seal.
Check the condition of the flange seal. If the sealing surface is damaged, replace it before installation.
Apply a small amount of lubricant to the bolt threads and flange surfaces. This will prevent stripping and ensure an even tightening.
Align the two flanges before bolting them together. This will prevent any cross-threading or misalignment.
Tighten the bolts evenly in a star pattern sequence. Do not over-tighten the bolts as this can damage the flange or cause the seal to deform.
Inspect the flange for leaks. Use a pressure test kit to confirm that the flange has been installed correctly and is operating within the specified pressure range.
Finally, check all connections for signs of excessive vibration or movement. If you notice any problems, identify the source and address them before the equipment is put into service.

Though many SAE 4-bolt hydraulic flanges look quite similar to each other, SAE Code 61, SAE Code 62, and Caterpillar 4-bolt flanges exhibit small dimensional and physical differences that cannot be interchanges. It’s imperative to make sure the flanges are of the same code and the hole alignments match exactly.
Flange connections use a gasket to ensure a secure seal and are best in conditions of exceptionally high pressures in piping systems of 7/8” OD or larger. They are used to connect pipe-to-pipe, tube- to-tube, hose-to-hose, etc. Or a single flange is used to bolt a pipe directly onto a component.
Flange fittings (aka flange adapters) are used with split and 4-bolt flanges when the mating connection is a threaded JIC 37° flare or other connection type. High quality flange fittings are made to endure extremely high working pressures and tensile strength, and are designed to perform in a variety of clearance applications. The most popular sizes of flange fittings range from 1/2” to 4”.
When fittings are involved, captive flanges are commonly used with MJ-Flange Straight fittings where there is smooth clearance to slide over the fitting allowing the flange head on the fitting to seat into the flange. Yet split flanges are used with 45° or 90° flange fittings (i.e. MJ-Flange 45 or 90).
A 4-bolt flange connection that complies with SAE J518 and ISO 6162-1 and 6162-2 (Code 61 and Code 62) ensures a leak-free connection and is best in larger sizes under high pressure and for assemblies in tight spaces. These 4-bolt flange port connections allow for the connection of larger sizes and attain high pressures with the capability of assembling at low torques. When compared to equivalent size threaded ports these low torque assemblies are typically the best choice in tight spaces, especially where there is limited wrench clearance.
